Documents going places?
State and federal documents follow different authentication paths — California documents through the California Secretary of State, and federal documents through the U.S. Department of State. Not every document needs to be notarized before an apostille, and some destinations need more than an apostille. We identify the correct route for your document and destination.
Certified vital records issued by the county.
Certified marriage records from the county.
Documents requiring a notary's signature first.
Corporate filings, authorizations, and court documents.
Diplomas and transcripts for study or work abroad.
Authenticated by the U.S. Department of State for FBI background checks and federal records.
What is the difference?
A notary performs an act.
A California notary performs an authorized notarial act involving a signer, such as an acknowledgment or jurat. A notary does not verify the truth or legality of a document's contents.
An apostille authenticates.
An apostille authenticates the signature and official capacity of a public official (including a notary, where applicable) on a document for use in another country.
Some customers need both services and others need only one. Not every apostille document requires notarization. We help you figure out which applies to your situation.

What does a mobile notary do?
+
A mobile notary travels to your location to perform eligible notarial acts, such as acknowledgments and jurats. The signer must appear in person with acceptable identification.
What ID do I need for notarization?
+
California law requires satisfactory evidence of identity, typically a current government-issued photo ID. The California Notary Public Handbook details acceptable forms of identification.
Does my document need notarization before apostille?
+
Sometimes. Not every document needs to be notarized before an apostille. Vital records and many official documents do not. We confirm what's required for your specific document.
What is the difference between a notary and an apostille?
+
A notary performs an authorized notarial act involving a signer. An apostille authenticates a public official's signature (including a notary's, where applicable) for use in another country.
Can you handle both services?
+
Yes. Some customers need both a notarization and an apostille; others need only one. We help you determine which applies to your situation.
How quickly can I get an apostille?
+
It depends on the California Secretary of State, the issuing authority, and the document type. We don't imply guaranteed timelines. Rush options exist for eligible documents when availability allows.
Can you help with translation?
+
We can coordinate translation through professional third-party providers when appropriate. The receiving authority decides whether translation is needed.
Is Inkcredible a government agency?
+
No. Inkcredible is an independent document services business. We are not attorneys and do not provide legal advice. We are not affiliated with any government agency or university.
